Vital Roof Maintenace Tasks You Should Never Ignore

While most roofs are built to last, they are not indestructible. If a roof is not properly cared for, it will lose its structural integrity and its ability to fully protect a home. Here are a few things that you can do to keep your roof healthy and strong all year long.

Clean the Gutters

The gutters on a roof play a very important role during rainstorms. When rain falls on a roof, all of the water travels downward and stops in the gutters. From there, it moves down a chute, which directs all of the water away from a home’s foundation.

When a gutter is clogged, water is unable to move through the chute. Instead, it remains in the gutter, and it will constantly rise during each rainstorm. If no action is taken, this water will back up onto the roof, and it will eventually make its way underneath the shingles. This is a problem because standing water from a gutter system can cause shingles to deteriorate.

Remove Moss and Algae

Moss is not as dangerous as algae, but you should always try to get rid of it because it can make your roof less attractive. Also, if it establishes itself on your shingles, they will not be able to breath, and they will slowly deteriorate.

Algae can severely damage the shingles on a roof, but the chances of discovering it are low. Algae will only grow in a rainy climate on a roof that gets frequent shade throughout the spring and summer. If this applies to you, you’ll need to clean your roof whenever you discover algae on its surfaces.

To clean a roof that’s covered with algae, just scrub the compromised areas with a cleaning solution that contains 50 percent beach and 50 percent water.

Remove Debris

When leaves, branches, and other debris fall on your roof and stay there, you have to take action. If these items remain on a roof, they could create problems down the road.

There are few ways to tackle this job. If you’re afraid of heights, you could try to blast the debris off your roof with water from a hose. You could also try to push the debris to the ground with a rake while standing on a ladder. If you’re not up for these tasks, a professional roofer can lend you a helping hand.
